Cutting Fat, Keeping Muscle

4 weeks in to my training

Cardio isn't really great for people wanting to build muscle. Cardio shreds body fat, but muscle as well. If you think about the endurance exercisers - runners, cyclists, etcetera - they look weak and emaciated for this very reason.

Cardio is also known for the "interference effect". Cardio prevents the proper recovery your muscles need from strength training, as well as cuts into your power level for when you are strength training.

So - you definitely want muscle. But you also want to rid yourself of as much unwanted fat as possible, and cardio can help you (and hurt you). The answer to getting cut muscular abs is a balance between strength and cardio - specifically low-intensity cardio. Steady-state walking and cycling. I'm not in the mood for treadmill, so this is my plan:

My strength training goes thusly: Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Sunday, Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday....

So, my low-intensity cardio - which will consist of 60 minute brisk walks - will be: Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday, Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Sunday.....

I plan to begin with brisk walks around my work in West Asheville, and then branch out to hikes - perhaps cutting a day or two out by going on hikes of a couple hours or so.
